KRISTIN. creative breakthrough time! so dang pumped...

 been thinking of how to create something SOFT and VAGUE... this is so hard to do while drawing... (so much easier to draw a line, than the suggestion of a line). and for some reason, i've not been moved to paint (which also accomplishes suggestion, a bit more easily)

also been thinking about what format this video is in, what physical parts are required (is it a crankie? a shadow puppet show? just a bunch of videos we take that couldn't really be reproduced live?)

so, tonight i stated playing with shadows projected from behind a paper (the way i've done, somewhat, with back-lit crankies. here's the first example... i happened to have this transparency of a photo i took, of this fiddler... and played around with him. i REALLY like the idea of using shadow puppets of real photos, in combination with drawings & made puppets/images. there's some incredibly impressionistic blurry photos from dday that inspire, and it'd be cool to play with having those images present. like some sort of shadow collage. take a peep:

i have recently fallen in love with the 3-d shadow puppet, and so next i made a diorama, which in real life looks totally hillarious like this:

but looks like this, when there's light from behind. here's a super super rough sketch of what's possible (and its only the beginning!)
--the creation of scenes with textured layers & depth.
--the ability to fly things through & move the scene (these birds are kinda sad, but you get the idea...)
-- the ability to project reflections & add sparkly textures wiht glass & water...
--the ability to use a second light to cast different shadows (and duplicates of same scene)-- this starts at about 1:22, and, i think, is totally amazing and reaches that abstract/real ratio that i'd been trying to find.

so... where do the dang drawings fit in? how can this be performed? what about crankies?
i'm muddling over these things at the moment.... and made this scrolling film of some of my drawings, with light projected from behind...

i'm wondering if there's some sort of crankie/puppet combination, where some things are drawn, some things are projected (moving in and out of one world, to the next... could one be used for memory??), and then we scroll onward to the next scene, crankie style. that way, too, it might be feasible to perform some version of the puppet show... the dioramas would be crafted more carefully, and permanently, so they could be performed live, i think...

anyhow, with that in mind, i'm gonna start thinkin' on some sort of proposal for the storyboard...

thanks for this project-- it's good to have a deadline/outside force to spur on some good old playing around in my studio!
